As most of us know, after almost seven years the cartoon Xiaolin Showdown is coming back under the title of “Xiaolin Chronicles”. Aside from some flaws we’ve seen in the WIP preview, some veteran fans of the series like me can’t wait to watch it. The plot is about four teenagers from different parts of the world who live in a Chinese Temple, train to defeat the forces of evil, the Heylin side and prevent them to use some mystical objects called “Sheng Gong Wu” to destroy the world. Each one of the kids represents one of the four elements (Water, Wind, Fire and Earth). The pilot is said to air in Spring 2013.
Now, since XS isn’t exactly new, some youngsters might not know it, and of course they have the right to be suspicious. And here’s my fear: that maybe because of bias towards “childish series” and the lack of making an accurate research, some of them at the beginning of the season or even at the future trailers, are gonna bash it accusing it of being a rip-off of a very now popular western cartoon: Legend of Korra.
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE LoK and AtLA, they’re my favorite shows. I’m part of the fandom and you just need to take a slight look at my blog to see the 80% of my posts are all about AtLA and LoK. What I mean that as soon as the definite trailer of XC will be released, I bet a lot of comments posted by 12-years-old will be like “THYRE CPYNG KORRA COZ THSE GYS USE THE 4 ELMENTS!!!!!1111”, or in case they’re older, like “What a nonsense, they’re copying Korra, they should be ashamed of themselves, I’m not gonna watch this crap”;they will continue ‘til the end of time and the XS fans will be feeling frustrated.
Because aside from this little fact, XS/XC and LoK have NOTHING in common.
So I just wanna tell you guys, not only as XS/XC fan but as a LoK fan too, before posting such rude things about this show without even seeing it, think. Act mature. If two people have a similar idea, that doesn’t necessarily mean one has copied the other, sometimes it’s just a coincidence, also XC just takes in consideration JUST the natural elements and stop, here ends the “rip-off”. Every movie/show/comic/anime has the right to use them for its own storyline, Bryke and DiMartino haven’t “reserved” the four elements just for themselves.
Some of you might think I’m worrying too much because this show was present in almost everybody’s childhood, but I’m in the Brave fandom too, so I know there are very rude people who bash shows and movies because they’re “copying” their favorite ones and they don’t bother researching for information first. Currently, Brave is accused of copying the Hunger Games (because Merida’s a female archer like Katniss), How To Train Your Dragon (for the landscape, though that story’s set in northern Europe and this one in Scotland), Mulan (because Merida fights, not for her dad but for her own destiny) and Shrek 4 (for Merida’s red hair, similar to Fiona’s), so I know how this goes. And the movie isn’t out yet!
I know it’s useless, but I write this post as a sort of “prevention” of future bashing and to make people realize what’s really going on before jumping in conclusions and starting to write angry posts. Legend of Korra and Avatar: the Last Airbender are great, the best western animation shows, but Xiaolin Showdown/Xiaolin Chronicles is very good, funny and better suitable for children, so please do not make comparisons between them. Let’s show the internet that the LoK fandom can be wise, tolerant, funny and sociable (keeping the shipping wars between us, of course, because you can’t ask for the moon).
Oh, and just a little note: The very 1st season of Xiaolin Showdown aired in 2003.
